Diggs Brown’s State of the Union

The state of the union under President Obama and the Congressional Democrats is one of lost jobs, higher taxes, larger government and less freedom.

Over the past year, President Obama and the Congressional Democrats have only deepened this recession.

‘Cap-and-trade’, which Betsy Markey voted for, would place a massive tax on energy, raising the price of doing business and burdening families under higher utility bills.

‘Card check’, which Betsy Markey co-sponsored, would drastically expand the power of union bosses and take away the right of workers to hold a secret-ballot election.

So-called ‘health care reform’ would put the government in control over one eighth of the United States economy.

Uncertainty about the cost of doing business has frozen business expansion plans. That uncertainty was created by the legislative priorities of President Obama and the Congressional Democrats.

But that was just the beginning of President Obama and the Congressional Democrats’ assault on our economy in 2009.

The politically-charged reshuffling of lenders during the government takeover of General Motors handed assets to the unions and sent a message that the rule of law no longer applies to lending.

The assault on the banking industry last week caused stock markets to crash and further delayed the day when capital can flow to expanding businesses.

The quadrupling of the deficit in a single year has devalued our money supply and placed a huge burden of nearly insurmountable debt onto the backs of our children.

Capital, the lifeblood of job creation, remains on the sidelines of this economy because of the actions of President Obama and the Congressional Democrats.

Unfortunately, however, President Obama and the Congressional Democrats have not learned from their mistakes.

Today, President Obama announced that he plans to increase spending on 89% of the federal budget. That is reckless and fiscally irresponsible and it will destroy job-creation.

If we want to create jobs, reduce unemployment and foster prosperity, we need to return money to the private sector and reduce the size of government. President Obama and the Congressional Democrats have proven that they do not understand the economy. This November, the voters will have the opportunity to vote for prosperity.
